In this assignment I was given the task of studying different types of games that populate the industry I will first name each game type then name a game that fits into the category, next I will explain why this game fits this game type, then I will explain the genre of the game I have chosen, finally I will explain the gameplay features of the game.
Simulation: Farming Simulator
This game fits a simulator as it simulates all aspects of farming, from cultivating fields, crop management, buying and selling of vehicles for farming.
A simulator creates a realistic creation of a real-world task that a player uses inputs to control a person completing these tasks.
Farming Simulator has elements from lots of genres but mostly survival and strategy as without careful planning you are liable to lose money and could lose the game due to insufficient funds to buy seeds for crops
Some of its features are multiplayer options so you can farm with your friends, realistic simulation of farming so if your crops lack water or get an infestation the crop will die. It features different maps so you can farm in different environments with different challenges to your farm. It also includes agricultural farming, livestock farming and forestry work.
Adventure: Pokémon
This game fits this type as you play as a child or teenager that traverses the world of Pokémon to catch and train them to be your friends to help you traverse harsher environments and become the best Pokémon Trainer.
An adventure game will take you through a world where you will explore and solve minor puzzles that may open up new areas.
Pokémon is Role Playing Game where you control a character that will play a role within the world and story
Pokémon contains many different features like the ability to catch and train Pokémon, Pokémon have eighteen types that all interact with each other making understanding the type chart a way to make the game easier. You can trade the Pokémon you have caught to other people and this can be essential to completing the game as the games often have a dual release of two similar games containing different Pokémon.
Puzzle: Suika
This game fits the puzzle type as you drop different fruit into a container from cherries to watermelons, to score you must get fruit of the same type to connect and grow larger until the container overflows and you lose.
A puzzle game will pose complex challenge that design to test you and stretch your brain capacity to improve your reaction and problem solving.
It’s genre is hard to pin down but I believe it is a food-based physics game when food must match to continue and gain points
It is visually similar to Tetris as it has a 2d view of a container in which you drop fruit into it of varying size and shape.
Compete for high scores by sharing scores with friends but there is no online or local multiplayer.
Action: Super Mario
Super Mario is a action game as you play as the titular plumber that seeks to save the princess from a villain (usually Bowser, King of the Koopas). To do this you must traverse complex levels that contain traps and enemies that will try to kill Mario
An action game will create an environment for a player to traverse that contains enemies that the player needs to defeat through combat or avoid to continue.
Super Mario is a platformer as you jump from platforms to defeat enemies and complete the level.
Some of its features are that you can plug in a second controller to play as Luigi, Mario’s brother, in newer games you can also play as Toads, Yoshi and even Princess Peach allowing for more players. It includes power ups for Mario and friends that may change the difficulty of completing the level. It features a world map to connect all the levels together
Combat: Pokkén Tournament
It pits two Pokémon against each other in combat where they use their moves to try and knock out the opponent in three successive rounds.
This genre often pits a player against another player or an AI that gets increasingly harder to beat.
It is a fighting game as the main focus is the two Pokémon fighting to see who wins.
It features multiplayer with two people facing off against each other rather than facing an AI. It has training modes and practice modes so you can practice you best moves and technique. It features support Pokémon that assist your main fighter by attacking the enemy Pokémon, disrupting the battlefield, enhancing the ability of your fighter or healing your fighter. It features an online multiplayer where there is skill-based matchmaking to ensure you go against someone of your skill level
Sport: Madden
In madden you control a team of American Football players where you play against another team of players at a game of American Football
Sport games are similar to a simulator games but often has you playing controlling many people or a whole team of player or has a third person perspective which is uncommon in simulator games.
Madden is a Real time strategy game a you control an entire team of players playing a game of American Football
It features many multiplayer options like you can have someone else play the other team through split screen or online multiplayer. It features a training camp to improve the skill level of your team and improve the composition of your team to better face your competition, within this mode your players can practice real world techniques. You can perform trades of player to adapt your team to reach new heights.
Educational: Pokémon Typing Adventure
It teaches you how to type by typing out names of Pokémon and moves that get successively harder to improve your typing speed and efficacy.
An educational game will be a game that could have a focus of any category but will have a lot of educational elements to it.
This is another Role Playing Game as you take the role of a small child learning their first Pokémon in the game world
The game comes packaged with a keyboard that connects to the console. It includes 403 of the 649 Pokémon that existed at the time of release. Wild Pokémon appear in front of the player and to catch them the player must correctly type the Pokémon’s name. It also feature boss to challenge the player further and a medal system that allows you to get some customization options.
