I followed a tutorial for creating an environment in Unreal Engine 5
It started off by explaining how to make a landscape and then creating a material for it by setting up three texture samples with landscape coordinate nodes and linking them into the correct sockets for the base colour, normal, ambient occlusion (A/O) and roughness with the A/O and roughness being able to drawn from the same texture sample.
I then taught me how to select rocks from Quixel Bridge, however that system is defunct now and has been replaced by Fab but I can still access the same mega-scans that were available on Quixel Bridge. It showed me the difference between open and closed meshes and how to use both to box in a player into an enclosed area. I also showed me how to lay out some rocks and boulders to add flavour to the landscape.
I next told me to find trees and foliage to be placed in my world to create a more natural environment. I found a pack called European Beech that included a nice mix of trees and foliage. Next the tutorial taught me how to use the foliage painter and how I can layer plants around my map. The next steps are to reduce the foliage to make it look more natural and improve performance.
