Unit 8: Pixel Art Refinement

I decided that I would be prudent to attempt to make more detailed sprites. I felt even if I did not like the product I could ask people in a survey about their opinions on the style and what they would prefer. I actually success as it was only adding detail and not a complete overhaul which I would have found difficult. I found that adding these details added real character to the sprites. With the “Blue Guy”, as I refer to him in files, he is quite am anxious guy and hides under his hood and wears clothing that does not attract attention and lets him blend in. I wanted to represent a younger version of myself, someone that found their anxiety and fear of the outside world crippling. As someone that has learnt to manage this anxiety I feel it is almost my duty to show others that it is not impossible mountain to climb, that there is a light at the end of the tunnel. I was also advised to try creating a side profile of this character as the first sprite sheet just had him walking forward left and right not directly looking left and right. I tried and I am admittedly not completely happy with how it came out but it is something I intend to come back to. I then recreated the sprite sheet including the side profiles which the walk cycle looks very odd and again is something I intend to come back to.

With this character I wanted to create a female character that has a positive outlook and is the bright joyous friend that has an unbreakable spirit. This is shown by her smile and upwards looking eyes contrary to the Blue Guy’s downwards look. With this sprite I started with a very low pixel count and doubled it to create the righthand sprite and then doubled it again to create the sprite on the right. I then decided that the body of her shirt used a radiant green I wanted to use elsewhere. I also added more detail to her shoes and trousers. I intend to continue to improve this sprite as well but I think I have found my sprite pixel density of 80 width by 120 height so I will not increase that but will aim to make minor improvements.

I continued to create pixel art designing my first monster. I wanted to create a tree zombie that would be in a forest maze dungeon. There is still a lot more to add to it’s design like details like I want it to have ripped clothes and a more menacing design if possible. I then need to add frames of movement as well as a side profile and back profile to it.

I then wanted to create another ally to the blue guy. Originally I intended him to be the Blue guy’s antithesis but as I designed him I decided that his outwards personality would be an armour that would be broken down throughout the game. He will also be a knight of warrior of his village shown by the chain mail beneath his jumper. I feel happy with the detail on him but I need to create back and side profiles and extend him into the full 27 frames that the Blue and Pink characters have.
