I have been procrastinating my secondary research and have decided to change each one for various reasons. With Fire Emblem Fates I feel I had enough story research from Pokemon Super Mystery Dungeon so I have decided to look at character art from Fire Emblem Engage. I have found that I own an the game’s artbook that was included in the special edition of the game so I am looking through that along with an Ask the Developer interview from Nintendo of America.
Instead of looking at the Dragon Quest Remakes, which I have found quite dry and difficult to research, I am going to look at Valheim’s environment assets as they suit my game quite well.
After trying to research Stardew Valley’s slingshot and finding nearly no information on this mechanic in the game bar the calculation for damage based on the slingshot you use and the item you launch which provides no guidance for me as my fireball will not have multiple types and not use different types of ammunition only magic so the player has to manage usage. I will instead write up what I Iearnt from the Unreal Documentation on transforms as this really helped my iron out the fireball mechanic.
I also want to look at what makes a good dungeon crawler as 3 of the 5 levels in my game are dungeon crawling levels so I feel its important to look at what makes them good. To that end I found a article from RPGFan.com
After reading the article on dungeon crawlers I thought to add loot to my game to encourage exploration so now the player does not spawn with any abilities and has to collect items to gain the abilities like a quaterstaff to pick up behind a house and a fire magic item down the trail from the village. I have also updated the pause menu to reflect this change.
I next decided to look at my third level and how I would make assets for it. I went into blender and remade the stone block I made for the portal and then made a pillar out of a cylinder and added some detail to them so there could be dark and light sections and I will texture them properly in Unreal. I also made a torch that I will add fire to in Unreal.
