Animation Project Planning: A Dragon’s First Flight: Justification, Appeal & Narrative

Justification & Appeal

I first started by reasoning with myself on what subject would both be interesting to the target audience (14-18 year olds) and to me so I maintain my own interest in the production of my animation. I settled on telling a story about a young dragon that gets lost without the support system that has been with him his whole life up until this point, his mother. This would both cover the target audience because the are at the age where they may be leaving home and need to make their own way in the world. Some examples include leaving for university or joining the military which can take an individual many miles from everything they know and are used to. I will use the setting to keep myself engaged in the creation of the project as I have a great interest in D&D and The Forgotten Realms in which I set my story

Story Narrative

I was given the theme of The Elements, so the natural choice for me was the Inner Planes of existence also known as the Elemental Planes. I decided to call my dragon Poto. I came up with the name using a Draconic name generator. My idea for the story is that Poto’s mother Ade (also from the same name generator) known as The Protector of the Sky by mortals, took her son after he learnt how to fly to the Elemental Plane of Water where like those that came before him he could practice his flying skills around the Sea of Worlds. However in his excitement he will lose track of where he is and where his mother was and in an attempt to find her again stray into the Plane of Earth. He will then be caught by air currents that will drag him through the Planes of Fire where he will be able to rest when he encounters a Pixie called Sunrise that he will befriend and the two of them will travel to the elemental plane of air. My plan is for Poto to learn a life lesson about the world and develop the strong sense of justice that bronze dragons are known for by the time he reunites with his mother.
